The goal of Sierra Nevada School
is to prepare fully bilingual students who are able to appreciate
the merits and advantages of both cultures. Even though it is non-sectarian,
universal values and ethical behavior are emphasized daily in all
aspects of school life.
In Sierra Nevada School excellence as well as effort in the classroom,
in sports, and in behavior are recognized. The Program
Preschool is the first important step in the child’s
learning process. Here the child will make his or her first contact
with the outside world. Sharing, socializing and establishing limits
and rules are part of this process.
Social and emotional aspects are closely observed as the children
go from one level to another. High self-esteem, self-assurance, adaptability
and universal values are emphasized.
The psychomotor process, including coarse and fine motor coordination,
is another important phase of the child’s development. Year
after year the child’s comprehension and use of vocabulary,
as well as a phonetic awareness of the English alphabet, increase.
During the last bimester of preprimary the students are introduced
to reading and writing in Spanish, thus allowing them to become part
of the bilingual and bicultural education offered in the elementary
grades.
This is a time of transition during which
the main objective is formation of habits, skills, attitudes and aptitudes.
These will be used as the basis for the student’s bilingual studies
which they will need in order to continue in bilingual secondary school.
An integral education is fostered in the elementary grade students, taking
into account their emotional, social, affective, artistic and psychomotor
aspects. Along with the academic program, this will give them the tools
necessary for their future studies.
At this level the teaching-learning process
of the English language is broadened, while the academic program is reinforced.
Our main goal is to prepare our students to enter university. By the time
they graduate from high school they will have acquired the knowledge and
skills required to successfully study whatever major they decide at the
university of their choice. They will have the well-rounded education which
is needed by the citizens of the twenty-first century.
